Hey guys finally got my hands on a baby alligator gar about 2-3" It came in a little smaller than I thought so hes in with a few feeders that hes not able to eat. I am currently hatching some brine shrimp and have tried blood worms but he hasn't shown any interest in them. Ive never had a gar this small so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

He should be eating the bloodworms. Maybe after a couple days he'll start eating them but very slowly. You might also have to force feed him so he will get used to the food.

well hes not big enough to eat the feeders yet. they are barely half his length. Ive only had him sense Friday so hopefully he'll start eating. He just doesnt seam interested in blood worms at all maybe he'll take the brine shrimp once they hatch.

It appears that he's taken to biting off their tails and than tearing out their stomachs while They can't swim away. Guess I may not need brine shrimp anyway

From what I have followed with my Gars:

* Till 4"-5" : Blood worms

* From 5"-6": Feeders (goldfish, mollies, etc.)

* From 6" (or when ever they start accepting other food): Jumbo krill, Prawns (small or cut into small pieces)

Feeding any fish "live food" (blood-worms, feeders) are not a good idea. But, I don't know if there are any other options with baby Gars.

Good luck,
Sid

PS: They definitely look like Alligator Gars.

Buy some guppies if able.

I did my homework and research on gar's. I got a 5" from the LFS. The LFS said he was eating frozen Krill. So I bought some to. That was a week ago. He hasn't even looked at the krill. So today I went to another LFS and they fed there gar's feeders. So I bought 6, and one by one he ate them up. I know how people are against feeding live. So I will keep trying the krill and every 5 days I will get some guppies. Does this sound right.

hey Andy i have a gar the same size and i give him Rosy Red Goldfish its in your local pet store so its not hard to get. I would suggest getting mollies though because i have heard that's the best thing for them. Good luck man!
