I added a Dogface puffer to my tank a few days ago and he is so skinny from the pet store I am trying to bulk him back up. He is in the tank with a snowflake eel who i am feeding cocktail shrimp but the puffer shows little interest in them. I put in a cube of brine shrimp and we was going nuts for that so i don't think he is still stressed. I am just looking for a cheap food that will help wear down his teeth.

Do you think he may like the raw shrimp better (i have precooked ones now) or any other cheap food you guys feed your puffers?

go with raw fish and you shoud all so look into rasing snails. it just got a couple of(pond snails) from lfs the gave out for free some times. you sould also buy some ramhorn snail. pop those in a 10 gallon tank drop some green veggies in there and watch you snails mutiply.

Never feed cooked food to your fish. Cooking denatures (chemically changes) the protein structures and can make it very difficult to digest. Fish can't cook their food (that whole fire/heat under water thing..) and shouldn't be given cooked foods. Sometimes tiny amounts are OK but for a staple it's not good. Think about humans, we evolved to eat cooked food, imagine what would happen if you ate a belly full of raw beef...your body wouldn't be used to it and, even though it wouldn't kill you, you wouldn't feel too well for a few days. A few good examples of denaturing protein is cooking eggs ans pickling meats. Egg whites (mainly consisting of the protein albumin) start off as clear and as heat is applied the protein structure changes making the "whites" opaque. Pickling meats has the same result, you expose the proteins to acids (vinegar) and the protein structure changes visibly (turns whitish).

Be sure to soak all his foods in Selcon & a good marine vitamin supplement.

You may also have to treat your puffer for IPs if he doesn't put on weight very soon with a good diet.

I hope he's in QT!

I'm not sure why you didn't pick out a healthier specimen?

try scallops, brine shrimp as you mentioned, squid and of course, snails...

Brine shrimp has no nutrition. Not the best choice for a emaciated fish. Better to feed it a live earthworm, injected with Selcon, vits & garlic.

well the puffers do like it... I personally think the earthworm concept is cool :)

never tried earthworms with mine yet. i havent been sure because my lfs doesnt have worms but there are some bait shops around i could get worms. i just dont know how safe that would be. i use them for fishing but never have used them to feed my fish or turtles yet

I buy them from bait shops all the time.

cool. was never sure if they used pesticides or anything in the dirt, or steriods for that matter(ever see some of the size worms you can get????) perfect catfishing bait :)
