Hi I just picked up a 6-7" Uaru. He doesn't seem interested in eating cichlid pellets or sticks. He seems to be grazing the substrate and nibbling the wood.
What foods should I be offering him?

keep with the pellets, it should take them eventually. but also include algae wafers, spirulina sticks, frozen bloodworm and live plants to graze on. pretty much what a severum would eat.

i used elodea densa when i had uaru as it was extremely fast growing and was very cheap. its very cheap off of ebay but lfs usually have a deal like 4 bunches for £5. it will also allow your severum to graze too.

My Uaru eats practically anything. They need their greens as well as pellets/meaty stuff. I put in cucumber and New Era american cichlid pellets to be specific.

I would guess he is just settling in so wouldn't worry just yet. I would stick in some frozen blood worm for the time being.. no fish I know can turn that down.

someone here phrased it well when it came to bloodworm "bloodworm is like crack for uaru". from my experience thats pretty much true, ive never seen a fish get so excited when i went near the freezer.

forgot to add cucumber and romaine lettuce is demolished along with shelled peas.

Give him time to settle in. the other guys have pretty much covered it but for one point, IME no matter how well you feed them, Uarus will at some point eat your plants!
Great looking fish BTW!

Thanks for the help. I'll just make sure the water is perfect and give him time. There's always pellets going in for the severums and cichla.
