what to have for a shoal?

Instead of giant danios, I'd put regular danios in. I'd also expect 'em to get eaten once in a while, and replace as needed, but at 2 for a dollar....
 
regular silver dollars dont get that big, the most commonly seen species. Others like those mentioned below do get large.

tinfoil barbs get like 12 inches...not a good choice

tiger barbs are quick and grow to like 3 inches and are pretty aggressive. they MAY be able to live w/ the larger fish, but will probably eventually get caught. just watch for fin nipping.
 
If you're really in Hartford, forget the channa. It isn't worth going to jail over a fish
