Is there anything good that can be kept in a tank that's 5 feet tall with a 40x23" footprint?

Only thing I can think of would be angels... but I don't really like those.

Does anything else work well in vertical tanks?

It was a reef tank before. I assume it just had a tall display of rocks and whatnot like you'd see in a store/museum or something, and then just a few small fish to swim around too. I've never kept SW and don't really feel like learning it though. But this tank is a decent price and would fit a spot in my house nicely so I'm curious.

It would make an interesting planted tank. Smaller fish would work better with that plan. You might want to consider altum angels. They're much more impressive than the usual ones you see in shops.

Guppies and tetras would look good if you did a planted tank.

Medium sized puffers? (not fahaka or MBU) Puffers are all over the tank and come up to the glass to greet you so it would be cool to watch them cruising up and down that height trying to get fed lol. Would be a bear to clean left over food though.

They'd have to be some damn impressive lights to be able to grow plants in a 5 foot deep tank... is that even possible?

Mbuna would all just hang out at the bottom. Do discus not require horizontal swimming space? I was actually thinking about trying plants & discus in a 125 elsewhere.

I like the idea of puffers cruising up and down endlessly. Are there any that can live in groups peacefully though?

i think a discus tank would be cool
