I ended up getting micropthalmus for a while before moving to Panama, kept half dozen in a 6ft tank, using flow from a pump of about 1200 GPH.
They did well with the strong current, and didn't bloat, I fed sparringly, skipping a feeding every third day.



When they first arrived they were only about an inch, and I grew them out with Amatitlania sajica

and the Madagascan Ptychochromis sp tarantrsy, both of which worked well, although I only had them about a year before moving, so hardly what I'd call much experience.
