what to look for when buying live rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh yeah the bottom pic. i seem to have some hair like algae(i assume)? is this bad? as mentioned i forgot to scrub the rock before setting up? will this stuff take over? would it be a good idea to scrub this crap off?...is this even crap!

One of the best ways to get rid of the algae is to keep your lights off during the cycle. That way you really don't need to complete any water changes during the cycle. Once the cycle is complete, I would change as much of the water as possible to get as much of the resulting nitrates out of your tank as possible. This will help to reducr your algae

You sould not scrub your rock before putting it in the tank. Its a good thin you did not do that. Scrubbing it would only remove more of the bactria that you are trying to grow. Keeping the lights off durning the cycle will get rid of most (if not all) of the algae anyways.

I'm finishing cycling my SW tank and this process has worked great for meso far. No algae at all in the tank

Good advice so far guys, and the tank is looking great. Your cleaner crew will take care of little clumps of algae like that when you add them.

Good advice about leaving the lights out during the cycle.

Not scrubbing also preserved whatever animals and plants were living on the exterior of the rock. Before the after-cycle water change however, I would recommend blowing off your rocks with a powerhead or the such to dislodge any dead material left over from LR dieoff.

Everything looks great so far, nice LR...get yourself a test kit and start watching for all nitrate. When you get to that point, do a nice h2o change, and start stocking.
