How about going saltwater and getting an undulate trigger. Really not that much different than freshwater, and it is a very personable fish (and it absolutely must be kept alone).
reason I think most monster tanks have large fish are due to the fact its more expensive to get lotsa small fish. say u decided to get a 2500 gal and put 1000 neons in it, that would cost 1000 bucks. but if u were to put coupla rtcs pacu and other cheap monsters it wouldn't exceed 100 bucks
I think you should do what Im doing at the moment and get a Channa Aurantimaculata they reach 45/50cm and they are predators.
