What to put in 20 gallon long

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would start with a 4 or 5, they will fill the tank in no time. As for tankmates, anything tough that likes high ph would work. Mollies would do great.

I have 4 mollies in the tank now that I was planning on rehoming but I would keep the in there if I could. Wouldn't the mollies eat the fry of the shell dwellers tho?

The shellies would have no problem defending their fry. Just make sure there not all the tank has shells, so the mollies can get out of the shellies face every now and then. Please post pics!

I just realized the the flow in my tank might be a little too strong for them? It's a super nano overflow rated for 200gph I think.

Shelldwellers are very resilient and actually like a high flow rate/water movement as the lake they are from is tidal. I would steer clear of the mollies as if they try and enter the colonies territory every adult will mob them.., I would just commit to the shellies and fill the tank half full with escargot shells (east to get online from any french delicatessen site) and you will be very happy. I kept multies but brevis could work just as well.. just do your research and get the species you want and yo will be very happy. I loved my Shelly tank and having written this and seriously considering setting up the 100ltr I have in the garage for another! Lol

I ordered some shells and gonna pick up some sand this weekend. I was thinking about doing just the sand substrate with shells and nothing else in the tank.

Thought I had somebody that wanted the mollies but it turns out they don't. My gf told me to throw them in the rb piranha tank

^^ you will get a few negative responses on here for feeding live fish to RBP but I used to use Mollies and platies as live food for my pike cichlids and fahaka.

If you don't have anything else to do with them, why not leave the mollies to see how they do with the shellies? There have been success stories with that, and they won't stand a chance with the RBPs.

Anywhere online have the shell dwellers for sale? Called all my LFS and they all said they've been pretty hard to come by these days

Had a change of heart. Gonna put a asellus puffer in it instead. Was browsing lfs and we fell in love. Still interested in getting a tank of shell dwellers sometime in the future tho. Have a big bag of shells too.
