6 angels in a 55 could work or it could be a warzone. If two pair up, they will defend an entire side of the tank. I have 1 6" angel that needs alot of space(40-50 gallons) and she's only living with a ram and some small tetras. Not saying not to try it, just that Angels are cichlids and just because they are considered peaceful doesnt measn they are not cichlids. They still need space as adults.
Bio capacity is something to consider as well. Half a dozen 6" fish will put you pretty close to your tanks capacity once you figure decor and adult size. If you can, try a group of angels, wait for a pair to form, then trade the others back in for credit. You'll have a pair that should coexist and room for plenty of other fish.
I second (3rd?) the angels. I have Phillipine Blue Marbles in my 75 now and they are beautiful. A close second for me would be a small group, maybe 5, of orange shoulder severums but they would eventually push the limits of a 55.
right now i am think about doing 4 geophagus orange heads, a proven breeding pair of blue platinum/platinum angels, 12 lemon tetras, 8 dwarf pencilfish, and 3 cory cats? would this work? good tankmates or overkill? i also plan to switch out my black gravel for some red flint sand, get my 3D background, some nice pieces of driftwood, and some plants to finish it off. what do you guys think?
Sounds like a nice plan. It it were me I'd skip the pencilfish and boost your number of cories up. Cories in larger groups are quite the attraction. Larger groups and you get much more relaxed behavior. Just my 2c
