What to stock in a 150g freshwater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good point on the intoduction of new feeders, would probably only feed slowly as to let the feeders continue to breed and establish their own population. This should limit the introduction of new parasites. Breeding would be awesome as I have an lfs that would happily take them. To the question of age, the kids are in 10th and 11th grade.

with a 150 gallon tank you can have a nice variety of american cichlids, if you're looking for something active, that reacts to humans this is the way to go.
- oscar
- green terror
- jack dempsey
- blood parrot
- red severum
- maybe even a fire eel... if its big enough

these fish will love the kids and will always eat, they don't require any special water treatment if the water is neutral already, and should have great looking colors... may be too distracting in class ;)

I say go native with north american natives. That way you can teach the kids about their local environment as well.

I would go with a biotope theme to teach the kids about the natural environment the fish would live in. Stick with species that are from whatever part of the world you want to choose.

I would love to be able to breed them. I think the behavior would be really great for the kids to see. Also, I have an lfs that would be willing to take the fry.

I say go to a 180 and get a jardini.

go to your lfs and buy the fish ppl brought in(plecos, catfish, cichlids). large fish cheap.

parachromis managuense or jaguar cichlid are egg laying at 4".They get very aggressive when protecting eggs. < very socialable and hardy fish.
jewel cichlids are live bearers. small ... feeder
convicts breed like crazy(not sure of bearing) small ... feeder

If the refugium can be set up as a seperate tank i would use it as a quarentine tank. either for feeder/breeder or sick fish tank

Watch Craigslist and other local classifieds
Put and ad for large and unwanted fish... stay away from piranhas and relatives (pacu, tetras, silver dollars)

cichlids need hiding spots, especially when breeding.

Guppies are a good tank starting fish to get the necessary bacteria needed.

A Native Tank Is Not A Bad Idea Either...
perch,crayfish,turtles,and catfish are very hardy.

as harmless as they seem bluegill and sunfish have been the most bothersome for me.

get some ca/sa cichlids as said.
oscars,gt,jd ect they are all very personable fish who the kids would all enjoy.

Not being negative however won't the tank distract the students?

still nice idea and goodluck :)
