Its 2 hours for fish you will possibly have for a long while, so long as you can count on them having decent stock its likely worth the drive. Mebbe do something like biotopish.. Green swordtails, maybe one of the thoricthys species (I like Malcupinnis over the usual meeki)

2 - 2 1/2 hours each way with a 2 year old is not something I want to do. There is also a strong possibility that I will be selling my house and moving across the country in 6 months. I have thought about doing Green Swordtails along with Firemouths. The only problem with that is finding the Green Swordtails and Firemouths here. Like I said, good fish are hard to find here.

Have you tried looking on CraigsList? I usually cruise it for fish a few times a week. Every now and again something I see something unexpected pop up... but I am outside of Philadelphia, so I have the Philly area, New Jersey, and Delaware to increase my odds of finding something. Are there any local fish clubs in your area? That would be a good way to maybe expand your options beyond Petco and PetSmart.

I was in Denver this week and went to a couple of lfs. The best one and in my opinion worth the drive would be golden fish aquariums. To picked up a few super red Severums.. They have a pretty nice selection.

Craigslist here is a joke. Its the place where you see $100 foot long pleco's and $80 deformed Oscars. Along with that you see the $300 29 gallon set ups and $500 55's. You might find Jewel's or Convicts on there though but never anything good. No clubs here either. Everything is up in Denver.

I have little free time to drive up to Denver. I wish I did. The stores there are vastly superior to the meager offerings that we have in the Springs. You are spot on about Golden Fish. That store is awesome. I wish they were a lot closer to my house. I'm probably going to have to break down and order some Thoricthys sp. off of Rapps. Rapps never fails to please. Makes me hope that I make my move back to Chicago soon just so I can get some decent fish.
