well im on the home stretch on building my new iguana cage.. now im looking for substrate ideas. i cannot find cypress mulch anywhere.. ive checked everyplace that i can.. what other types of mulch could i use?

what are some other natural looking substrates that i could put in his cage that are readily avalible if i cant find mulch?

just buy eco earth, cheap easy to use, looks great and holds the humidity in good

8 bucks for 3 bricks that will do about a 6 foot by 6 foot area at about 1-2 inches

Sounds like some fuzzy math to me. Two bricks was just enough to put 2 inches of substrate in the bottom of my 55g aquarium.

:nilly:

Anyway, I wouldn't recommend any mulch at all for this guy. No matter what you do, your iguana may ingest some of the material and may get impacted. Bad news. Most keepers would recommend something like astroturf. It's easy to remove and clean when it gets soiled. Take a look at the link below for some indoor enclosure examples.

Madwhitehat is right, eco-earth is great for frogs, toads, salamanders, etc. but NOT for Iguanas. They might ingest it (not good) and it will be a ******* hard to maintain and clean (Iguanas are messy and poo ALOT)! Use something that is safe (non-toxic), can be swallowed, and easy to clean/replace. There are many sites that deal with Iguanas strictly, I suggest consulting those.

Good luck

Newspaper or herp carpet:D I think the bad things about the other subst have already been mencioned

i have carpet in with him now an i absolutely hate it.. there is nothing good about it. he is to big for new paper lol.. he would just throw it around..

i dont know what im going to use. but i am not to worried about using mulch and stuff like that.. i have kept bigger lizards who eat more agressively and i haven never had a problem.. ill have to wait and see what happens.. not sure what route in going but im not using carpet. and i dont like tile..

Yeah.....I've done a lot of stupid things too.....

Stick with the carpet. There's no reason to put your animal in danger, which is what you would be doing.

then i guess everyone that keeps larger monitors, tegus, water dragons and stuff like that are doing stupid things as well? just about every monitor setup i have seen uses a mulch or dirt substrate..

people are the same way with bearded dragons as well. everyone says to not keep them on sand due to impaction problems but how many do you hear about? not that many.. last time i checked there arent carpets out in the wild?
