You're comparing a carnivor who's stomach digests bone on a regular basis to an herbivor who's stomach digests leaves and fruits. And no, a monitor's enclosure should not have mulch either. Most monitors require dirt to construct burrows. In any case, mulch is a bad choice for your iguana.Mike D;1980248; said:just about every monitor setup i have seen uses a mulch or dirt substrate..
The reasons you mentioned for not using the carpet where all about you and not at all in the best interest of your animal. Your enclosure could have nothing more than a tile floor and he wouldn't care. The carpet is to allow most or all of the feces to be easily removed, for ease of cleaning the enclosure. Why take the chance with mulch when the carpet is the better choice? Sounds a little selfish to me.
Good luck finding even one reputable care sheet that says mulch is a good iguana substrate.
