I have a spare 3x2x2 tank that I would like to set up in the garage to breed feeders for my main fish. To save money on electricity and to have a low maintenance running tank, what ype of fish can I breed that wont require a heater and light?

Well there are two common types of feeders, guppies and regular gold fish. Its harder to breed regular gold fish as (have a spawning pair) but guppies are super easy to breed but they do take some time as they eat the young at first. Saying that, you can get a couple hundred within a couple months. Hard thing is that they need a heater and there relatively small. I had a guppy farm back in the day and my jardini would eat 30 and look hungry still. Its pretty hard to "farm" your own fish. I would just recommend buying feeders, so much simpler.

Thanks for your advice. I did think of breeding guppies at first, but due to the size and knowing that they need a heater I also thought it may be to much trouble and costly to run than what it would be worth!

I was hoping there may be a certain type of feeders out there that are really easy to breed and also cost efficient to run the tank. Guess I will just have to continue to by them from time to time!

Guppies are what you can do in your home. But you'll never breed fast enough to feed your fish. You will need to get many many many many breeders going. And raising the fry up to size ready to use as feeders. You would need to get this going for many months before you can even begin to start feeding your fish. Cause how many feeders can your fish eat every day? It be a full time job just breeding fish just to keep up with being able to fed a sizable guppy to your fish.

The most cost effective way is to just buy what you need. Setup a 10-20 gallon to hold your feeders. Buy 100-200 at a time. Normally you get the best price at 100 lot. breeding requires many tanks to breed and to raise the young.

First let me ask. What is it you are trying to feed?

I can't think of any fish that will breed in a cold dark environment. Having said that some fish commonly used to produce fry for feeding are convicts or assorted live bearers such as mollies, swordtails etc. Both of which will require both light and heat.

However there is another option. Worms, they need to be kept in a cool (not cold) moist, dark environment. If you Google breeding red wigglers you will get some good how to instructions on how to accomplish it fairly easily. They are a great and nutritious food that can be propagated, cheaply.

just feed pellets I trained pirahna to take pellets.
Not everyone wanted to feed their fishes with pellets :) (I'm not debating which food is better than other food type)
Some just wanted their predator fish be a predator and thrive to watch their predator hunt their preys so they will do extra work for that.
@for poster question the cheapest way is setup 2 small tanks to quarantine your feeders (size 10 up to 40 gallons) and you can keep Comet Goldfish or Rosy Red. Also, try to make a deal with your LFS and buying bulk...I paid 1000 feeders for 30 bucks. (Note: they don't count but instead weight by pound so depend on feeder sizes you would get 800~1200 per bag)

What about marble crayfish? I hear they are very easy to breed as they clone themselves and don't need a mated pair per say. My jack dempsey used to love crayfish.
