What type of chichlid is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks something like a Chilotilapia rhoadesii!! My reference book has them looking to be a more blueish colour but saw some in a petshop that were rather pale looking.
:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

Looks like a hybrid to me aswell. Any chance of a better shot?

I haven't been coming to this site too long, but there sure are alot of "looks like a hybrid" responses. Yes, I'll agree that hybridization is a HUGE problem in this hobby. We can thank alot of the "Dr. Hybridstein's" on places such as Aquabid. However, I've seen more poor quality pictures than anything. IMO, from the picture I see, there is little to suggest being a "yellow lab hybrid". One person here says a hap type while another says an mbuna hybrid. That's a huge gap in species. Yes, I do realize there are the OB "this or that Hap" for sale many places that is a Hap/mbuna hybrid. Most of the time, on other sites, I just see people say, "can't really tell" or "could you get a better pic?". Also a problem is that there are only a small number of mbuna that are common in the hobby. When a wholesaler/breeder/hobbyist, like myself, imports/buys some of the species that you don't see at the lfs, they are often misidentified.

For the record, I'm actually quite hesitant to tell a person their fish is a hybrid...but in this case, it likely is. A better pic would definitely help, but you can clearly tell from the pic already posted that its a mbuna, not a hap or peacock...and if you know what you're looking for and look well, it looks like a yellow lab hybrid. At best, maybe a VERY poorly bred lab.

Your little guy is a C. boreyli, not a mbuna. The OP's fish is definitely a mbuna.
