I'm just now getting into keeping fish as pets instead of ch etching and eating them... was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what type of fish too keep in a 50 gallon tank?

you need to look through a good book mate ,and see what your attracted to ,from there find out if its acceptable for your tank or if there is something similar that we could suggest , but there is thousands of fish that would go in a 50g

are you looking for a pred, com ,or species tank ?

cheers col
im only looking too spend $50 for a tank and filter system, the other $50 for the fish you think i could get a tank and system that cheep?

and thanks where can i find a book? is there any online i wont be able too go too a fish store for a while..

50g and filter for $50? good luck, try craigslist. most good 50g filters are $50 as is... anyway, yeah with $50 for fish you could do a SMALL set up of several different things but that'll go really fast.

what you mean it will go realy fast? i might have too go smaller... i don't think i want anything BIG. just some cool bright colored fish that swim in schools.

i meant that fish add up really quick. especially when your stocking it with smaller fish. but you could do a schooling barb tank?? or platies, they typically have nice coloring.

yep with your budget , pre-owned is going to be the way forward , if you manage to get a 50g and filteration and you want colour , look to the african cichlids smaller mbuna (very colourfull and hardy)or for sholling theres plenty of nice tetras barbs rainbowfish ect as suggested above , smaller than a 50g then good old comunity tank should suit you. you could probably pick up a decent book at amazon ect. sorry i dont know any names off hand its been years since i read one and they will all have changed by now

theres no way in hell you could set up a proper african tank with that kinda budget, for the 45 i just set up i spent almost 50 bucks just on the substrate, and you gotta add the heater, lights, structure, filter (not a crap filter either!!!), then food, water conditioners ( ph buffers, salt, etc), then you can think about fish, acouple hundred dollars later lol. Maybe you should think about maybe a community tank, loaches, danios, etc, dont get ahead of your self if your on such a small budget

Oh and good luck finding a 50 gallon for 50 bucks

and plus most of the "stay small nicer" AC are at least $5 a pop, the even cooler ones at least $10....

go with a comm schooling tank
as for books, you could just walk into a LFS and read dont buy lol
petsmart usually has some and magazines
