What type of gar is this?

Was gonna move this to the gar forum before I saw the pic, but realized its actually a characin

Man, give the guy a break. He is obviously trying to do research before buying one. That is why his first post says he wanted to know what they are before buying one.

if he didnt make it obvious that he was trying to find a fish that is illegal in his state i wouldnt care at all. when people break these types of laws it effects all of us in the hobby. since the fish listed above is not a gar and he obviously wants a gar, i would go ahead and purchase the above mentioned fish. their care is pretty basic and they are a fun fish to keep. just make sure you have a well covered tank if you get them...they are very jumpy and will find their way out. also floating plants help keep them calm.

aside from the fact you are trying to find an illegal fish in your state...maybe you should do some research before buying them. if you can't properly id a gar, i doubt you know much about them. just a thought.

and yes...you can readily find true gar in Cali, but it's still illegal.

i know hujetas are legal in california...that is why i said to go ahead and buy them. i think you misread my post. gar are illegal in CA and that is what he originally wanted.

they are hujetas.
or rocket "gars".
get to about a foot.
but around less than 10 inches more likely.
not very jumpy like many characins shaped the same way.
had mine on pellets.

Hmm, they seem cool, but I really want a florida gar, sucks that they are illegal in california.
