What type of Oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Color morph of a lutino red oscar. Lutino reds have been around since the 90s, and the lemon popped up since maybe 2012.

Owned many SA,CA, African cichlids over the years but for some reason never tried a Oscar. This one just had a cool color and was very boisterous.
Glad I picked him up.
He gobbles down pellets like it's his job then goes into the corner of the aquarium and you can tell he's grinding them up and swallowing most of the food.
But he also spits a bunch of uneaten pellets out and they just sit on the substrate.
I was thinking of just giving less food but more time's per day?
Other than that annoying habit he's got a great personality.
Thanks all.

He will spit out pellets if he has too many in his throat to swallow. They will grab as much as they can to fill their mouths, and then try to use their "throat teeth" to draw more in. If they can't draw more in, they spit out the rest. Don't give him too much at one time. Figure out how much he can swallow, by first starting out with 1 pellet, wait 30 seconds, then another. Increase to 2, and repeat until he gets to the point of spitting out crushed pellets, and then you will know the max.

If you hear crushing noises, after taking in 1 pellet, then it is too large for their "throat" and you will need to get one size down. Common mistake of new oscar owners is to associate mouth size with throat size.
