What type of powerheads do you guys use?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
which would do u find works best in your opinion? everyone says they have maxijets, so i thought i might go with that

you can't go wrong with maxijets they're great lil pumps

If you are just loooking for adding current and eliminating dead spots than the Hydor koralias are awesome, i put two of the (4) largest models in my tank and the next gravel vac i did i was amazed at how much less stuff came up after having the 2 running. Well worth the money in my opinion, O ya and if you use any powerheads around the 400gph range excpect to lose any of the fish that can fit into the intake. Thats why i like the koralia it takes water from a large area and spreads it over a large area.

RIO!!

yea i was lookin at dr fostersandsmith on the hydor koralias and it seemd like a pretty good buy. one thing though, would it be just as effective in a freshwater tank?

rio's and maxijets would be next on my list but right now im thinkin bout the hydor koralia after looking at it this morning

I have 2 maxi-jet 400s and 1 maxi-jet 1200. They are virtually silent except for the motor humming, if your room is dead silent you can actually hear that. If you use the venturi then they do make some noise, I turn the venturi off completely for tanks in my bedroom. Noise isn't a problem with these powerheads, trust me because I'm super-sensitive to little noises.

does your maxijets do a good job of cleaning up dead spots? my tank is gonna have a slight sand bed but mostly bare.

Well it depends on the tank. I have one 400 on a 10 gallon, one 400 on a 20 long, and the 1200 I have planned to put in the 75 - I've tested the strength. For these tanks there aren't or there won't be any dead spots. I imagine you can still have dead spots if your tank is huge, in which case you can add another powerhead.
