What type of sunfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how long have you had it? It could just be spawned out, I have caught longear that look like that (usually in the mid summer) Get him eating pellets, if he will not fatten up in a few weeks he could perhaps have an internal parasite, but i would think this is very unlikely.

I've had him for about six months and he looks exactly the same as when I got him. A friend of mine proposed that he could ave been green x longear. I think that's what he said. Because greens are more shallow bodied. Like oval shaped and longears were deeper bodied. More round shaped. This guy is right in the middle. I'll start feeding him more and see what happens.

It's a normal longear. He's not anymore narrowbodied than a normal longear he's either just poorly fed or has intestinal parasites, so he's a bit sunken bellied. Once he fattens up he should have the normal body shape.

BTW, please don't release him, it's against the law not to mention pretty unethical. Unless it's into a private pond or something that's not attached to any other waterways.

I said before that I did have a private pond so no harm right.

hey are longer sunfish native(or live in) CAlifornia waters?

what kind of sunfish are available?
i've caught bluegill, green. and i read that there are redear and some pumpkinseeds. what else?

and do they all breed with different types of sunfish..i've caught some wierd looking ones before..

usually sunfish will breed with their own kind. Green sunnies and bluegills will cross, but I believe that their offspring are infertile because they would have taken over if they did.

wait what do you mean? the eggs won't be fertile? who's taking over?
