What type of wood?

Anybody know what type of wood this is? And is it safe to use? Saw good ones being sold really cheap. The owner uses them for his aquariums so I tried one and it doesnt seem to harm anything. Its releasing some kind of brown poop-like stuff tho but thats it. Heres a pic from my phone. The wood is redish-brown.

it's called tannies... Driftwood produce tannies that will eventually, as of now, leeching into your water. You should have treated it first before you've put the wood within the tank.
 
Also, remember that driftwood will lower your PH. I learned the hard way.
 
I brushed it, power-hosed it, and gave it a good hot boiling bath. Haha is that not enough?

Nope some woods just don't get that easily to be out of "tannies" ok ok, tannins.


no, tannins.

looks like it's probably mopani. it's a great wood, will last for many years.


I do want it to call tanies to be cool and sound ish-ish... lol.
