What types of rocks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use mostly slate - im too far in on the left side of my tank but the right has no gravel to make it easier to stay clean( but you can actually see any bare bottom since its covered by rocks and driftwood

If your worried about keeping it clean you can lay some flay slate as a base for the rest of the rocks you stack- you can always build it more as you go along - just try to keep plenty of hiding spots to calm aggression I have alot of caves driftwood and plants and 20 africans and so far I have only lost 1 fish to aggression (fingers crossed)

I had a pleco and my melanochromis ate it's eyes off, that's they only fish I've lost other than a bigger jahonni but it was old. Can you post a pic of how you have your rocks?

Here's a quick phone pick of how I have my stacked. I placed eggcrate on the glass to avoid any pressure points then I placed the biggest, sturdiest rocks on the eggcrate. I then added my sand until the bottom layer was half covered. Then I just started adding pieces one by one. They are all odd shaped so it too a bit of time and trial and error to figure out a way where they all interlock together yet still have plenty of caves but the pile is extremely sturdy now.

Malawis are mouthbrooders, so females will hold eggs in their mouth for about 25 days.

I have a 50 peacock and hap tank with all holey rock. I keep it in the middle of the tank that way the fish can enter from the front or the back. Will try to upload pic later. As was said holey rock looks great but the damn stuff is very expensive. I paid $4 a pound and this stuff is really dense so the weight turnd the scales quckly. LOL
