Could'nt you "cure" the wood in a tub outside for a couple of months? Changing the water every weekor so, testing the water until nothing shows up.

That's another option. Some people like to initially add salt to the water and change it out to freshwater in the "final soak/s".

I have used a lot of Eastern Red Cedar from limestone areas; It makes interesting stumps in reasonable sizes. Get stuff that has weathered a few years. The final step is critical; take the garden hose and wash off dirt and bugs; I hope nobody tells me this won't work because I have been doing it for decades and I would hate to find out I was doing it wrong!
For weight , I drill long holes and drive in steel rebar.

cedar is about the only wood that i've heard that can release toxins into the water .I've read a few posts where hickory was used without problems but i'm no expert i always use store bought or driftwood thats been sun bleached.
as with anything you add from the outdoors it needs to be sterlized ,wood is no exception .. baking on low for a couple hours works well for large peices and i like to boil small peices gets some of the tannins out at the same time if needed.

I just bought cedar driftwood off Ebay.

up for auction is a natural cedar stump.this is a beautiful addition to any aquarium or reptile cage.it is good for any small or large lizard, frog, fish and birds aswell.

Cleaning..all pieces are cleaned theroly.first they are wire wheeled to remove all bark and algae.after that they are soaked in fresh water.next they are heated to a temperature of 250 degrees(this does not hurt or scar wood)to kill any possible parasites.

THERE IS NO CHEMICALS OR BLEACH USED FOR CLEANING

Is the cedar only a problem if these steps are NOT taken first. :nilly:

Is there a list somewhere of what types of wood can put in an aquarium? Is there ways to be able to put it into an aquarium. I have a lot of hickory that has been outside for approximately two years and I was wondering if I could work with and put in into my tanks? Bake it? Soak it?? Any help would be appreciated.

I know you can SMOKE fish with hickory... just do it slowly!:D

YUMM!!!!
