what will mix with mbuna?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You know, I'd tell you what i'd say about it, but firstly, I cant be bothered to give you the satisfaction, and secondly, I'd probably be banned from this site (not that that would break my heart). Quite frankly, I could care less what any of you do with your tanks. What bothers me is the ill advice that runs rampant throughout this message board. But you know, I will have to say SphericalCube, you actually made me giggle. I've seldom seen someone so willing to publicly flaunt their own ignorance. :clap I wish your fish well.

When I win the POTM contest with the picture of my ill fated doomed fish then I'll gloat. . . until then maybe you should ask me how I get my fish to live peacably with each other rather than berate me for trying. . . . . . . . :raspberry

Simply stating your oppinion (and experience) will not get you banned. If you personally attack someone and start a flame war, then maybe.
I am really open and interested in what others think. I still have a lot to learn, and without others knowlege I cant do that! There is a reason I asked for your opinion, and I respect your restraint to fight with others, but please dont hesitate to post what you think.

I'm glad you posted that. There are things out there I've seen in people's tanks that make no sense to me. . . but it doesn't mean it won't work for others. . . . an open mind is best.

Well Jimmy, I'm glad your so optimistic about your photography. I never said your fish were doomed. As for what fish people keep with what, It really doesn't bother me. Again, it's the suggestions that mixing certian fish without providing the negative aspects of it. I will openly appologise for the "barking" nature of my initial statement (it was a long day). and i will admit that i have kept a frontosa with my malawi in the past. I saw the negative impact it had on the front, and he was moved into a Tang only tank where he is obviously far happier and more comfortable. I'm really not interested with starting a pissing match between members. I will however, continue to advocate against mixing malawi, tangs, and SA cichlids.

11 months and running. . . . .

11 months does not a successful tank make.

I've seen bad mixes last years, then one day, one fish decides he's tired of another... and another... and another.

Then you read a post that says "I don't know what happened, they all got along so well...."

Best of luck to you.

I, as an avid Malawi mbuna breeder (50 species of wild caughts), must agree with those advocating against the mixing of the different fish. :clap :clap
Fronts are extremely docile fish and should not be mixed with especially mbuna. You could mix them with Haps and Peacocks but we should try to recreate the environment from which they come. They cannot tolerate the incessant harrasing that the mbuna will give them. :swear:
As for the identifying of male/female caeruleus, I must disagree. Once a male is mature you can definitely tell the difference. They tend to be quite a bit bigger and they also develop a darker colouring to their face area. I have 2 males and 2 females and these differences are very distinct.
As for Silver dollars. :screwy: Do you really want to subject them to water conditions that are quite different to those they come from?
The biggest killer of fish is STRESS. Bad water conditions  will only aggrevate this condition leading to the un-necessarry death of some fish:screwy: :swear:  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why not put Malawi's into water with a low PH value????????? Not the correct thing to do for the fish!!!!!!!!!!!As for the level to which this topic has sunk absolutely amazes me.:screwy: :p :yuck: :shakehead  :wall: :jaw: :thumbsdow
I don't feel as though I would want to post a topic for fear of the junk :bs: :angryfire that I can expect as replies!sic!! Let us focus on giving people sound advice rather than something that sounds good. The replies should be for the best interest of the hobby. Make a pathetic suggestion, someone tries it and fails, suddenly they stop keeping fish!!!!!!!
IS THIS WHAT WE REALLY WANT HAPPENING??????? I ask this with tears in my eyes:cry:         !

And I just bought gas for the flamethrower!

i will also agree with this and disagree with mixing malawi and tang species. that also goes for mixing africans with c/sa cichlids. these are totally different environments where although bred in captivity, still should not be forced to live in un-natural environments. i'm not saying that i know what the fish is feeling, but if you use your common sense (if you have any) then you would realize that the conditions can not be comfortable for the fish. yes, things may work for now, but it won't stay that way. i believe the heat in this arguement is not behind the mixing debate, but behind giving someone false information. so i'll skip to that. if it's something you do, then fine. but STOP recommending it to people who are UNfamiliar and who are asking because they don't know. you are wrongly educating them. telling someone to add silver dollars or jds with their african cichlids is completely wrong and more than anything, ANNOYING. as scotty stated, this all leads to nothing more than STRESS and DEATH of the fish. you are basicly sentencing your fish to a slow and stressful death due to lack of a thriving environment! JUST STOP IT ALREADY!! :swear: how about someone put you in the desert and see how long you live?
