What works with angels?

Actually yeah, discus can be kept with angels.
I dunno about the betta though , I guess it COULD work in some weird way, it's not something I'd suggest though.

I have my angelfish with 5 jellybean parrot/convict crosses (or some such hybrid, I dunno), but they're fairly nonaggressive as far as convict hybrids go and don't really mess with anyone.

You can mix angels with any smaller schooling fish that won't fit in their mouth (not too hard, they have a pretty small mouth), and that won't pick on the angels.

Rainbows are indeed a good option.

If you wanna do a really typical, yet great looking tank, go with Angels, Cardinal tetras, and Cories.

We put a male betta, 2 discus, dojo loach, a silver dollar, and Pictus cats in with my son's angels.

Do you relise that silver dollars need to be in groups? and Discus should be kept with discus only.

There's no rule that says discus must only be kept with discus. Many people keep them with angelfish and other fish and they do just fine.

Bettas are fine with angels. I have had my betta living with my 2 angels for about 5 months now.

Angels get a large mouth once they hit 4". Mine could easily swallow a full grown guppy.


Clown Loaches are hardy in my tanks and I have 5. Had them for about 10 months now and never had ich.

Angels have small mouths for their size. I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I consider my africans mouths fairly large, I consider my basses mouths large, I don't consider angelfishes mouths large. BTW, I think I already mentioned not mixing them with small schooling fish that they can easily swallow.

I also never said that bettas can't live with angelfish, I said it wasn't something I would recommend. Individual bettas can mix with a wide array of fish, but it doesn't mean bettas in general can be recommended as good tankmates for those fish. Bettas are largely a "try it and see" as a community fish because there's is such a varying degree of experiences mixing them with different fish. I don't see why a male betta wouldn't work with angelfish, it's just not typical.

I was never much of an angelfish fan until we set up my wifes angel tank. They have a lot more personality than I gave them credit for and seem to get along with a wide variaty of fish. At the moment our angel tank is also home to three small Pbass....a few mollies (I have NO idea why my wife picked them...LOL) and used to have a handful of guppies. Oh the tank is also the temporary home for 'Houdini' my new RTC/Marble hybrid and Prince a royal pleco.

I think bettas are fine with angels if given the correct space. I also agree with you about africans having huge mouths, they do, I doubt doubt it for a second but for an angels shape, you wouldnt take them for having a large mouth, yet when they yawn, it can be surprisingly big.

They probably are. I've mixed bettas with a lot of stuff and they seem to be fine the majority of the time. I just can't recommend it myself because it's not a common mix and I haven't tried it myself. Well, I have with females, but they are a bit more agile - if another fish decides to go after them they're at least not quite as slow as a male with a large amount of finnage.
The big danger with bettas seems to be when they're asleep they don't notice ANYTHING. If another fish decides to chew on them for whatever reason while they're asleep they won't even wake up
The biggest problem I've had is with guppies, but I tend to err on the side of caution anymore when mixing fish with male bettas because of the fin chewing thing.

I still think angels have small mouths for their size. We'll just chalk it up to the type of fish I keep, lol. I will admit that they can swallow bigger stuff than you would think though.
