Just checked out your pictures again, the small pieces of gravel scattered around the disc of the ray look very irregular in shape, most have sharpish edges to them.As the ray grows its movements become more powerful,it could well be cutting the edge of the delicate disc as it makes sudden dashes when viewed from above, move the gravel Alex, its too big anyway, use some 2mm round stuff if you choose to use gravel,i use 2mm and it works well for me,remember dont have it too deep, just a scattering will do.

those pictures were taken in a hospital tank not in his pond,
i was doing some major work on the pond and needed to move him out over night into the temp tank so took the pictures in there
.... the gravel you see in that tub isnt in the pond

the only substrate i have in the pond is about 2kg of fine sand and a sprinkle of small pea gravel and it only covers one corner of the pond and its barely 1mm deep... the rest is just the plain rubber pond liner

i will take it out anyway but really cant see this being the problem

as always ,i really appreciate your help richard
seems no one else has an opinion :irked:

i have heard and seen symptoms similar to yours being caused by a parasite. the fins erode in certain spots and the cure was a course of prazi pro followed by a course of metronidazole. the fish's fine ceased eording at the end of the course of medication and grew back within 5 weeks.

I've heard of this too. Seem to remember a post on here around last September about the same thing.:(

could the powerhead or filter intake be to blame? Is there a guard on the intake with slots or just the round tube? It could be getting sucked in, and when the ray pulls away tears? IDK, just an idea.

Beautiful ray. Perhaps it is irritated or has external parasites or fungus causing it to scratch itself in an effort to relieve itself. Just a thought.
