what would i be getting into with a gulper cat??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This isn't my fish or video but this is probably an accurate depiction of what COULD happen. I don't believe it's a responsible thing to do feeding it something that size but I'll leave it up to the experts.

Insane how this guy eat.... Fish was 2x its size :WHOA:

My Gulper Catfish stay in a PVC house that's 4" in diameter x 10-12"+/- long. All three are residents in a 40 gallon "breeder" type aquarium that is 36"x18"x15"+/- tall. I use a sand/small,fine natural gravel mixture for the substrate. A Fluval 305 provides external filtration, and I also use a large, high quality foam sponge filter with a penguin powerhead for extra current, mechanical, and biological filtration. They are in with a 6-7" peacock bass. I feed them a variety of meaty foods. They don't have to ability to suck a prey/food items using the gill flare method, like most other fish. They have to grab their prey using their jaws, kinda like a gar would. The inability to use their mouths to inhale food makes it hard for them to pick up a pellet type food off of the bottom of the aquarium, especially if there isn't any substrate covering the bottom of the tank. Also, their long "bulldog" like lower jaw doesn't help at all. They almost have to invert their body upside down in their attempt to pick up pellets of any type off of the bottom. Hikari Massivore Pellets are the ones I chose to feed, because they are thicker and therefore easier to get up off of the bottom. All the fish that I have experimented with, seem to like those pellets ALOT more than any other type that I've tried. My little Gulper Catfish just tread water in their little PVC house 24/7, unless I am feeding them. Every time anything (other fish, including each other)swims by closely, they bite first and ask questions later. Thanks.
