If your bio load is huge and out competes your system then you will need a skimmer. It should do a good job though. Fleshy is correct skimmers are great for FOWLR and almost needed for predators. Skimmers are essential but not for every application, see how the fuge and filtration handles it first. Then if you want to do less water changes and spend some money on a good skimmer, do so ;)

+1...happy medium ground between our two opinions, probably the best advice.

holy **** i would never spend that money... i just build one of those for 15$...

how can i build a hob refugum like that for 15$ . skimmer, light, box pump, mud ect. even if i could build 1 would cost at least $200.

i could build my own sump and make it that way but the addtional plumbing irritates me. eg. overflowbox, pump, return. it is so hard to find a good return system for a tank that is not predrilled. the overflow is no big deal. lights not cheap.

what media should i use in the canisters? i have efimech and substate pro in them now with filter floss. i could run some phosphate remover in 1 of them. instead of a hob refugium i might just invent in a quality skimmer and a few extra powerheads.

More flow the merrier I say. I also love me some protein skimmers.

The best way to figure out what you should use in your canisters is through water testing. Test your water, see what you need to change, and use the appropriate media. I use a little matrix carbon, but mostly I use purigen now on my tanks. Good luck.
