Question. Do you want large fish now or in the near future? Haitiensis aren't going to grow as quickly as a trimac/midas/jaguar will. You may be looking at 2 years before a male haitiensis hits 10". A barred midas would rapidly outgrow a haitiensis, so I'm not quite sure how that would work out. Full grown males of either species probably will not tolerate another large male fish in their territory either. I'd pick one species, grow out a bunch of juveniles and go for a breeding pair. Haitiensis pairs are very active :)

cool, thanx
i have two bn but dont know the sex there only 2"
how do i sex and at what size

You may be able to take guesses at that size. Look for a LOT of black coloration on the middle/back of the bodies. I could pick out at least 1 female at 1-1.5". It's still not a guaranteed method though. By 3" the dominant males will start to get nuchal humps. Females will start looking much more darker in color.

I've had 2 batches. The frist were the 1-1.5" ones from Rapps. There were 2 obvious females in the group. Unfortunately, due to tankmates, I lost that group. Definitely need to watch the meal size for this species when they are young. They will eat themselves to bloat & death :(

The 2nd batch came from one of Rapps' suppliers. They were a little larger and I didn't have any bloat problems. Out of 7 fish, I ended up with 4 males and 3 females. The first pair formed somewhere around 4".

thanx i will post pix later
to avoid bloat how often should i feed?
im currently feeding 3-4 times daily is this too muchh
there diet includes beefheart, bloodworms, and cichlid gold as staple

Feed them 2 times daily with mostly protein enriched foods and two or three times a week replace the morning feeding with a veggie such as a pea or zuccini. Do alot of WCs and they should grow a little faster, but BN are slow growers.

When they were small, I used mostly veggie food. Many small feedings. Once they hit 2.5-3", then I started feeding larger meals and mixing in more protein. By 3" they LOVED tearing through pieces of raw shrimp!

thanx darth, here are 2 pix the first one i assume to be male cause he chases the other aroun and has less black spots the second is "maybe" female can u sex?
