I currently have four tanks with CA cichlids and another 65g standard (36x18x24") that my wife gave the ok to setup in our smaller living room. I could go my usual route and stock it with a smaller type of CA, but I was thinking maybe I should try something different. Caveats: my water is extremely hard and I prefer something with personality (just a school of tetras isn't going to do it for me). That said, here are the ideas I have:

-Tanganyikan biotope with Multi's, comps, paracyps (I like the idea but the tall tank is going to be tough to 'scape)
-A smaller CA cichlid "wet pet" (ideas?)
-Some other type of wet pet that can handle the hard water
-Other....need ideas!

Australian themed tank, had one many years ago, rainbows with gobys, always found the gobys had good personality.

I agree with rainbowfish. Freshwater gobies like stiphodon are cool, a friend of mine has a 70 with large rainbows, various loaches, some gobies and a few cories. With flow the tank looks lovely and rainbows are very cool!

I think a red wolf ery ery would be fine in there. I know they are from SA but I believe are pretty adaptable as far as hardness and pH.

The tang idea would be cool. I think you could actually make great use of the tall tank, silicon a bunch of rocks into a tower type structure, would look great.

If you wanted a wet pet, something like a female istlanum would be cool. They are pretty and mean, and don't get too large.

Any more info on the red wolf? Google'ed it but only seeing a few youtube videos.

I had a knight goby, (Stigmatogobius sadanundio) needs hard alkaline water or brackish, kept mine in fresh, ate out my hand and was always begging for food.
A great little fish that max out about 4 inch.

Gobies seem pretty cool! What type of rainbows are the most interesting?
Any rainbows really. Once they develop colour it's worth it 100 times over :)

They get to about 8", active as far as wolfs go, they don't exclusively sit on the bottom. Will take chunks out of tankmates I understand. Cool looking fish and supposed to be fun to own, "wet pet" like.
I have not owned one, but have wanted to for a while now
