Wasn't sure if this belonged here, so Admins feel free to move it. I put it here because it's all for a RD/midas.:screwy:

I am thinking of setting up my empty 55 to get a red devil/ midas. But I need some input.

Fish from my 75 could be moved to the 55 if the RD needed more space someday (moving the RD to the 75). I would move my Eheim canister into the bedroom for the new tank because it's quiet, and add an (unused right now) HOB to the 75. Then I would use cinder blocks and a piece of plywood for a DIY stand in the bedroom. If the only place to set up another tank was pretty close to your bedside, and the stand was DIY cinder block, would you do it?

When I lived at my parents house I had a 90gal and a 58gal all in my little bedroom right next to my bed. It wasn't to bad once I got used to it.

In about 6 months to a year the RD/Midas is going to need the 75gal. a 75gal is the bare minimum for a single adult. They grow pretty fast and the 55gal will be to small IMO.

I think your RD will definitely need the 75g eventually. I think you'd be ok if you put the tank near your bed but there are a few things to take into consideration...

1) Full-grown RDs can create quite a splash even with a lid on the tank. My larger cichlids are sometimes active in the night and it sounds like the movie "Jaws" in the tank. It might disturb your sleep somewhat.

2) You'll need to do frequent sizeable water changes for such a large fish. Can you comfortably work around the aquarium without getting your bed soaked?

If you think you'll be fine with these, then I say go for it. :-)

put as many tanks as you can wherever they will fit :D

You know a 55 won't be a great tank for a red devil or midas for life though right? A 60gallon would be better for either of the species.

I keep three thirty gallons in my bedroom and they don' bother me, which reminds me.. I need to fill them up lol. They are loud as hell right now and I'm not even noticing it. Damn evaporation..

Thanks. The tank wouldn't be that close to the bed; maybe like 18" away. And yeah, I figured the RD would need the 75 eventually. What is everyone's experience with RD's and bottom-dwellers?

keep devils alone unless you've got big enough tanks, maybe a common pleco if he grows up with him. I have 7 devils in a 130gallon and they never fight. I put a male and a female in a 55gallon that were showing interest in each other in the 130 and the male killed the female over night. Tank size makes a huge difference.

Would a RD/midas hate my bichir then?

i've go 5 tanks in my 15 by 15 foot bedroom i like seeing my fish begging for food right when i wake up in the morning.=)

LOL. I like your sig, liberator. That'll be me one day. . . maybe sooner than later...:D

imo if youre gonna keep an extra large cichlid then do it on linoleum. i keep all my tanks on either linoleum or concrete. too many splashes to soak into carpet. and i dont like mold. plywood and cinder blocks? as long as its not just cinder blocks at each end. make it a solid cinderblock stand and then just use the plywood so the tank isnt sitting on the blocks themselves.
