Wow...when you put it that way I feel so bad for Aussies:( .

I would have added an additional poll "Collect Australian fish" Because, maybe not to you, but to most of us the fish from Australia are pretty Monster and interesting man.

Your right, we do have some very nice natives.... but their not as nice as other oddballs. It would be like all americans keeping sm bass etc. Their big fish but their nothing special.

Is it the laws that don't allow you to import fish or something else?

What are the laws like about keeping native species? You ausies got some cool natives.

There is a list of fish that you can import, if it's not on the list you can't import it...

what about online ordering? i would think you could get some nice stuff from asia. but i dunno. bummer for you guys. also breed what you can and sell locally, i bet you could make a killing. ;)

There are a few online stores getting around but there just as expensive as most LFS. Private sales is where you can get half decent prices...

Having said all this there are 2 very positive points to having higher prices....

When your buying a $350 fish, you do your research on the species and are usually an experienced fish keeper, so the fish is well cared for.

Because of this Australia will never be like florida, No one would buy a $300 fish and dump it in a creek.

Two good examples of this...

6" Red Belly Pacu....... $250+
6" Arapaima gigas....... $1200

Would you pay a bomb for these fish without knowing their max size and what your doing.

i wouldnt pay for em unless i had a hefty income

now thats what i call INFLATION,

All of the fish on that list are inappropriate for most fishkeepers. If your option to "give it up and kep tetras" is realistic, nowhere in the world could beat the assortment of rainbowfish from Australia.

Comparing this:

...to a bass is unfair to say the least.

Likewise, if you could "hoard and breed as many (Arapima gigas) as you could", I'd love to see it.

I doubt the hobby is in much danger of collapse just yet.

This is monster fish keepers, most people here have these fish, the question was aimed at these people.... not the people on here with 20g tanks.

Use your brain, i didn't mean hoard and breed gigas,RTC,TSN etc!
I'm talking about birchirs,pbass, fancy pleco's etc...
