Hey guys, the question is....

What would you do if Oddball fish prices in the USA/UK etc were the same as Australian prices? ALSO importing fish yourself is NOT an option!

I want you to think carefully about whether you would still keep oddballs...

Could you still afford to collect these fish...

Prices for example...

$40 12" silver Aro......now $300
$30 8" Birchir..........now $350
$100 5" Motoro's..... now $1200
$15 2in Indo's..........now $200
$30 12" Sp.Gar.........now $450
$30 12" RTC.............now $450
$30 12" TSN.............now $300
$30 12" RCK.............now $350

These prices are pretty much rock bottom private sale prices...
(Most LFS would be much more!)

Makes me wish I was an exporter of fish to Australia...

But NO.

I Worked at my LFS for 5 years and saw the wholesale stock lists. Seeing these dirt cheap prices messed with my head for a few years... I suddenly had lots of trouble paying reasonable prices after years of paying cost prices with store discount.

Nowadays, I dont mind shopowners making profit when I pay high prices at all for a rare fish that is hard to obtain. especially saltwater.
(And contrary to belief, fish dont usually generate that much money for the LFS owner- its the junk to maintain them that makes the cash.)

But at those prices!! its madness!! no way! no how! I would just admire and covet the rich guys fish.

Ironically,
I feel like I would pay $300 for an ugly ol' sleeper Cod from Australian waters...and they are a plain common food fish there...

Well, if aimed at US market, I think I would try and find deals anyway. But no, I wouldn't pay that kind of money for fish. I would just keep good friends with people that do and go see their fish!!!

Australia is like one gig giant island, isn't it??? So I would think the Aussie Govt wants to protect native species, hence the restrictions. There are warm waters where tropicals and introduced fish can live there. Arapima would eat your barrumundi.

sounds like hawaii to me

a 5-6 inch arrow would sell for about 40-60 here. depending on the store.

Who ever the people are who said they'd give up fish keeping because of those prices are completely stupid. Price's matter a little, but I'd pay, just because if I love a fish I see I will have it. I would never "give up"

I,m glad i live in holland rtc, tsn are fairly cheap here. In your situation i would just save some of my money and then a oddball
every now and then.

Good luck saving;)

Anytime i look for a new fish i search high and low for good deals, it's the only way to go.

Over here your crazy if you buy full price from a LFS

True, Arapima would murder our barra stocks but who's going to release a $1200 fish into a creek?

At the moment i don't think we have a problem with large preditory fish, it's mainly the smaller livebearers that are taking over.

6" silvers at their lowest price would be around $200

I've seen them in a couple of stores for close to $500

i dont know what to vote for cause you said that this is if prices went up to the prices of oddballs in aussie and one of the voting choices wasnt "or would you keep your fish and not buy more".

I pay whatever the owner asks.

If I want it bad enough...i'll pay it.

I usually get better prices than most though...
