I return wallets, purses, cell phones, etc. I do not report blank evelopes containing cash. The only time I did not directly return a wallet including the contents was to some jerk in a suit in San Fran that I saw drop the damn thing, I yelled for him several times and chased him for about three blocks shouting and waving the wallet at him. he took one quick glance my way and sped up. a block later or so he saw I was still following and waving and he took off running, screw it, I took the cash and tossed the wallet in a mailbox. I was in uniform and it pissed me off that he ran from me.
I don't expect a reward, I just have had a few lost items returned to me and try to pass that along.

I ran into the same sort of situation in downtown Columbia SC after class. I found a wallet with about $200 cash, platinum credit cards, etc. I drove straight to the Columbia PD headquarters and turned it in. Interestingly enough, the officer at the desk was the same cop that had arrested me a year earlier for speeding. He said "Huh, guess you're a good guy after all, I figured you for a drug runner!".

I was wondering: How do you feel about that cop saying that? I think if it were an unpleseant cop a remarl like that could seriously annoy me.

Generally I think taking money for returning a lost item is bad taste. However, if I were in financial difficulties or the owner of the wallet was loaded I 'd keep it.

I once had wallet with $890 cash taken by a pickpocket. He bumped into me in the supermarket. I realized something was odd about one minute later but he was already gone. About a week later my mother found the wallet in her mailbox. All my documents were there and even $90. He only took the hundereds. I felt almost grateful.
