Ok, so I have a situation. I'll try to make this as brief as I can.
I had taken out my grass in my front yard and I cut down two of my trees. There has only been dirt in the front yard for a few months now. I plan on doing landscape but I really was trying to put it off until the end of the year. My brother, a few months ago, asked me if he can raise some chickens in my backyard for eggs since they go thru a lot of eggs. I told him it's cool but if someone calls the city on me, just get rid of them.
So, over the past few weeks, he is selling chickens and getting new ones thru craigslist depending on which chickens are laying and which ones aren't. So there have been some selling of the chickens a few times at my house.
I get a letter in the mail one day for 3 code violations. Apparently you can't have chickens in the zone that I live in, lack of landscaping and doing an illegal business from my residence.
One of my neighbors called the city to report me. The chickens are now gone, I told the city that the illegal business thing was bogus (which I'm assuming whoever reported me said I was raising chickens to sell to make profit). But it's gonna cost me like 2-3 grand to do landscaping on my front yard. I wanna do away with grass and go with a desert theme. Just have plants and trees and gravel/rock as ground cover. I talked to the city and I MUST have 2 approved trees from a list and I have to have 1 approved plant per 15 sq ft which adds up to like over 150 plants. I can go back to grass and only required to have one tree. But I wanna do away with the maintenance and cost of water in the long run so I'm gonna do the desert theme which I must submit a drawing to the city and they charge $173 to review it. They'll tell me if they approve or what I need to change/add to get it up to code.
So here is what I'm struggling with. One of my neighbors called the city to report my code violations. I live on a street that isn't a thru street. There are only 7 houses on my street. The neighbor I'm suspecting that reported me also has violations. You can only have a certain percentage of hardscape, which is concrete. They have way over the limit on their front yard. The thing is, I am only speculating that it was that neighbor. It can be anyone on my street. There are a few houses that are in violation to certain codes.
So first of all, I'm ok with the fact that my yard needs to be within the zone's codes. But my question to you guys is, should I just do my yard and forget about the whole thing? Or should I call the city on who I suspect reported me? Or should I call the city on everyone who I see is in any kind of violation? I mean, if I have to be compliant and lose money to bring my residence up to code, so does everyone right?
The reason why I suspect a particular neighbor is because she asked my brother if I was gonna do anything with my front yard and a few days later the letter came. If I report this neighbor, they'll have to demo a lot of the concrete which is gonna cost them a pretty good chunk of money as well
Let me know if you guys have any questions. Thanks in advance.
