I'm Where I'm At
Ok, so I have a situation. I'll try to make this as brief as I can.

I had taken out my grass in my front yard and I cut down two of my trees. There has only been dirt in the front yard for a few months now. I plan on doing landscape but I really was trying to put it off until the end of the year. My brother, a few months ago, asked me if he can raise some chickens in my backyard for eggs since they go thru a lot of eggs. I told him it's cool but if someone calls the city on me, just get rid of them.

So, over the past few weeks, he is selling chickens and getting new ones thru craigslist depending on which chickens are laying and which ones aren't. So there have been some selling of the chickens a few times at my house.

I get a letter in the mail one day for 3 code violations. Apparently you can't have chickens in the zone that I live in, lack of landscaping and doing an illegal business from my residence.

One of my neighbors called the city to report me. The chickens are now gone, I told the city that the illegal business thing was bogus (which I'm assuming whoever reported me said I was raising chickens to sell to make profit). But it's gonna cost me like 2-3 grand to do landscaping on my front yard. I wanna do away with grass and go with a desert theme. Just have plants and trees and gravel/rock as ground cover. I talked to the city and I MUST have 2 approved trees from a list and I have to have 1 approved plant per 15 sq ft which adds up to like over 150 plants. I can go back to grass and only required to have one tree. But I wanna do away with the maintenance and cost of water in the long run so I'm gonna do the desert theme which I must submit a drawing to the city and they charge $173 to review it. They'll tell me if they approve or what I need to change/add to get it up to code.

So here is what I'm struggling with. One of my neighbors called the city to report my code violations. I live on a street that isn't a thru street. There are only 7 houses on my street. The neighbor I'm suspecting that reported me also has violations. You can only have a certain percentage of hardscape, which is concrete. They have way over the limit on their front yard. The thing is, I am only speculating that it was that neighbor. It can be anyone on my street. There are a few houses that are in violation to certain codes.

So first of all, I'm ok with the fact that my yard needs to be within the zone's codes. But my question to you guys is, should I just do my yard and forget about the whole thing? Or should I call the city on who I suspect reported me? Or should I call the city on everyone who I see is in any kind of violation? I mean, if I have to be compliant and lose money to bring my residence up to code, so does everyone right?

The reason why I suspect a particular neighbor is because she asked my brother if I was gonna do anything with my front yard and a few days later the letter came. If I report this neighbor, they'll have to demo a lot of the concrete which is gonna cost them a pretty good chunk of money as well

Let me know if you guys have any questions. Thanks in advance.

for those saying "too long, didn't read" here are the cliff notes

1. someone reported me to the city that I have chickens and no landscape
2. it's gonna cost me roughly 3 grand
3. other's on my street are in violation of some codes
4. do I call to report the one I suspect reported me? (but it could've been anyone) or should I call to report everyone I see that is in violation or just take care of my yard and let it go?

Without 100% proof that she reported you, it would just be pure spite on your part. Me personally though, I would tell on her just out of spite. If i have to spend money, so do you lol

Im a spiteful person as well, so if someone reported me, an i suspected i knew who it was, you bet all hell will break loose...

Without knowing for sure, I wouldn't call in on them ... I might get someone out to look at my yard once it's finished to see if it's 'in code' ... comparing it to the ones that our out of code while he's there. :)

The thing is, there are a few houses that have violations. Should I just call to report everyone I see?

My yard will go thru an approval process before I do anything. I know the codes now. And they'll come verify once I'm done

Yeah, I'd wait until they come to verify ... that's when you point out the others. ;)

And they won't do squat. They will only act after someone calls to make a report. Unless of course they see something that's hazardous or dangerous

lol yea i would just tell the city if you are gonna give me violations, come take a drive down my street and start enforcing lol. as far as your yard, do you thin that they would get mad if you uses astro turf? the nice stuff you can hardly tell that it is fake. as far as your desert theme, you could plant a bunch of yucca plants. they are very hardy. we use them back were in from in nebraska for landscaping. it can get 115 in the summer and -20F in the winter. get some dragons blood and pincoushin cactus patches as ground cover. for the trees you can use joshua trees. mesquite trees would also be a good choice. plus you can use the trimmings in your smoker lol

Yeah, but without knowing 100% ... I wouldn't do much more than that. I need proof before I'm spiteful back. I 'm not usually spiteful, but when I am I don't like to hit the wrong target.
