I'de rather feed my fish frozen/live ( QT'd or home bred. pref the latter) then either of these... pellets are apart of my fish's Balanced diet. Anything in excess isn't good for you or your pets. I picked Goldfish.. because my fish won't touch massivore.. but love other pellets. Massivore imo is over rated... and I'll take a healthy feeder goldfish every now and then to the pellets. I avoid preservatives any chance I get with my fish, as I do myself.

"Live food is bad! Pellets good!" ;) no koolaid for me thanks.

btw Nightcrawlers are almost a "perfect" balance of protein/fat/ ect.. and no preservatives. :naughty:

So to reiterate.. nothing in excess is "Good".. not all live foods are bad.. neither is offering a goldfish now and then. As always another debate of the greatness of massivore vs live foods...:chillpill:... Knowledge is power.. and making the best choices for our pets is good. But stating so boldly that giving a fish a feeder goldfish means you don't care about your pet.

Is not very nice..:(
"Not all live foods are bad" - Correct it's just goldfish/carp that happen to be bad (look up "thiaminase poisoning from goldfish" or read the piranha nuitrition sticky it has some info about it that pertains to all fish).

I didn't say live feeders are bad, im breeding convicts as feeders for my fish.

And never did i say that pellets are the only thing that should be fed to a fish i feed mine a mix of frozen/thawed fish, pellets, superworms(giant mealworms) and convicts it just so happens that nuitritionaly a massivore pellet ALWAYS beats out a goldfish (gram for gram).

theres no reason to even give your fish a goldfish every once in a while they provide very little in the way of nuitrition to the fish you are feeding and can expose your fish to a plethora of problems (parasites/diseases and yet again thiaminase poisoning).

why not use the money from those ocassional goldfish snacks to go to a different food source? One that will actualy be of benefit to your fish.

another very good point =D

Unfortunately you kinda gave that impression. :WHOA: Just clarifying as many people seem to have an "all or nothing" approach. I'll still chance the Thiaminase poisoning to starving my fish ( which some flatly refuse anything but live, and as a hobbyist and fish enthusiest I think it's poor husbandry to starve your pet to make it eat what You think it should eat... not what it wants to eat). not everyone sees in shades of grey.. but simply black and white.. and where life and liveing things are concerned it's almost always grey. I'm not saying I don't agree with the general statement implied.. but alot of people will take it wrong. Goldfish are bad.. but so are alot of prepared diets. imo your compareing a MCDonalds Hamburger, to a BK hamburger.. Neither is really good for you... ;) .. but sometimes you just want one..

comparing a pellet to fast food simply dosen't work its more like a goldfish would be like a big mac (or deep fried twinkie) and a pellet would be some sort of prepared intravenous solution of nuitrients

sometimes you just have to do whats right for your fish, is it cruel to tell a child that he can't always have a big mac even if that's the only thing he eats? hell no same idea with fish their health should always be at the forefront of your mind whether it takes a little effort to get them eating right or not

mind you i have nothing against feeding live if the fish is that sort of fish that dosen't prey upon anything other than live prey (i.e won't eat pellets or frozen/thawed foods) then a diet of live food may be nessicary but goldfish shouldn't be at the top of that list for food items. Mollies, convicts, guppies, angelfish, live shrimp and crayfish are all great options.

it's just goldfish and carp species that have been found to have high levels of thiaminase in their bodies most other fish are entirely suitable as a steady diet.

another good argument haha:grinno:

I chose pellets just because most people who feed live never bother to quarantine, plus eating fish such as goldfish can cause fatty liver disease in a lot of fish... so personally, i'd think pellets were probably a safer bet long run...
