A guy on Craigslist is selling a complete 75g tank with all the bits and fish for $250.

I don't want his tank, I want his fish. He agreed to sell them to me and said: "make me an offer."

What would you pay?

4 fish: a large pacu, a large oscar (red), a large pleco and a small fish that he can't remember the name of.

That's the truth. People always get greedy when you say you just want the fish, and not the tank. They'll try and make you pay half of what they're asking for the whole setup, and the fish were basically free to start with! But because you've shown interest, they've suddenly increased in value? It's happened to me two or three times on CL.

Whatever the small fish is worth. He should give you the other 3 if you can properly house them.

a draft of my e-mail to him.....

I am asking around to others involved in keeping large fish too see what they are worth. Pacu's get to be so big that they are usually just given away. That is how I got the one I have now. I know I have seen full sized common pleco's at fish auctions for very few dollars, seems they are worth more when they are small. The oscar on the other hand is worth a few dollars.

Do you have any idea what the smaller fish is? Perhaps a picture of him, I can probably identify it.

I am going to be away this weekend for an out of town wedding, would it be possible to see them and maybe pick them up on Monday evening?

Do you know what your levels of nitrate, pH, and GH are? I am hoping that our water is a close match, if not I can set them up in a tank to allow for a slow acclimation.

I haven't sent it yet. I am thinking to offer $ only for the oscar. Maybe $25-30. I want to see what he says to what I have so far. If this tank hasn't had its water changed in 10 years, I am not sure I can properly acclimate fish that big.

Pacu should be 7.99 per pound, just like the market near my work... 15-20 bucks for the oscar and pleco, each.

I'd give him up to $50 maximum., starting at $30. you're doing him a favor by taking the fish off of his hands. he can disassemble the tank and sell it without having to worry about maintenance of the fish. if he can't sell the entire package as quickly as he'd wish, he's got to continue to maintain the fish. you're making his life a tad bit easier and less stressful.

Honestly, offer to take them so he can sell the tank to someone who wants to get their own fish. It is obvious he has no interest in keeping them & he will likely have better luck selling the tank empty... IMHO
