i don't know if its been stated already but term "baller" originally came from innercity "ghetto" communities as a slang word..... reffering the "drug man" who used to "ball up" narcotics in 1/8 oz otherwise known as 8balls...... usually these "ballers" had large amounts of cash and were very flashy with their expenditures therefore perpetuating the image of wealth and success....

Oddballer= one who seeks out oddball fish.......

8 balls are crank....The word "baller" came WAY after the early days of "pushing" rock cocaine....Cocaine came from not the hood FYI....Rocks were/are referred to as Hubbas, Hubs, Rocks, Boulders, Soup, Ya Yo, Ya, Girl, (boy is heroine), Etc....Baller was made by the corporate America/media and then adopted by studio rappers (extensions of "the man"..) 8ball is not crack or coke and is no way related to the spawning of the word "baller"....The word is versatile and it is a simile.....
