whats a better filter

I am deciding on whether to get a rena filstar xp4 or a ehiem 2217. Which one has the most media capacity I know alot of people here are all about flow rate but. I'm a big believer on the amount of bio you can stick in there. I can get either canister for the exact same price

Grab XP3.....the 4 sucks..not worth the price difference.

The Rena has the largest capacity between the two but don't forget that you can never have more BB (benificial bacteria) than your fish load can support. The 2217 is by far the more reliable and well built of the two filters for the money. Other options however might be better for you if we knew the planned stocking list.

I have 2 RENA XP4s (around $100 a piece when I bought it at BIGALS ONLINE) adn a Aquaclear 500 HOB Filter on my 125 gal. have had it for a few years with no problems. with a 55 gal. one XP4 should be plenty.

XP4 should be fine, I would go with the rena.

So, by 3 RDs in a 55, you mean one, after the other two are killed?

I have 3. 8 inchers. They all get along and mind there own buisness also have two plecos they are all whimps.

Whats the differnce between the xp3 and xp4. Besides the extra trays. Is there a capcity difference or flow rte difference
