I`ve had HOBs`, sump, canisters in many different combinations..finally settled on a pair of eheim2236 and a smaller HOB for an African 55.
I went with the 2236 line for the price and Eheim rep.
Works out well for me

I wouldn't bother with the old style Eheims. While reliable they are a pain in the neck to close. Go for one from the new Eheim Ecco range. Low energy consumption and reliable as you would expect from an Eheim.
There are other option but I don't know if they are available in the US/Canada. Tetratec, Sera fil and JBL filters are all very popular over here. Whatever you do stay away from Fluval externals.
