Plecos! One or two may hide a bit but once you get a nice collection going they become aggressive pack feeders, swarming the bottom of the tank when food is present.
I have found synos too heavily armored to be deterred by peaceful Cichlids. They will raid and destroy spawn sites and can even become fin and scale nippers.

pictus are good catfish and they are extremly active, i ahd one and he was always out lookin for food, top or bottom
