HOT mag 250 IMO is the superior filter over the 350 because of the flexibility... Its easily portable to change between tanks because of the size and hang on tank design, the media is easily changed out or cleaned, and when it comes down to it the 350 is kind of a pain. I don't want to mess with a canister when I have to constantly clean or change out media that is necessary when using a filter as a water polisher.

Agreed. I use a 350 simply because I have it. It came with one of the used tanks I bought. It was my first canister and I loved that filter. But then I started getting serious and realized how lacking it really is. It does do a very good job of polishing though.

Unless you have an acrylic tank which has a partially covered top..... in that aspect, it isnt flexible at all......

They both work well, but for some the 250 isn't practical or just won't work because of the tank design....

question how do u all clean the polisher filter in your magnums whats the proper method

I don't clean the polishing filter...just toss and replace.

That is one of the drawbacks of the 350 IMO, the standard media isn't reusable, but at least it's inexpensive. But, the micro filter is a bit costly and doesn't seem to rinse out well.

I use a diatom filter about twice a month and it is amazing at polishing the water . I let it run for about 2-4 hours . I think my water looks great , then i run the diatom and it looks like my fish are in mid air in an empty tank lol!

I use a old diatom filter and its a pain to clean. I bougth a 9w uv ster. But maybe I'll but a few bills away each paycheck and buy a magnum 350

Check around at your LFS and Craigslist too. If you're only going to use it to polish, I wouldn't be afraid to buy used at all. The LFS here has used 350s for $40 a pair!

IMO. the HOT 250 is the only thing they make that is worth paying for new. I use it infrequently when water clarity is very bad or if I want more circulation, I don't normally worry about super crispy water so it is used on all my tanks for short periods as needed. Don't get me wrong I had a number of 350's back in the day. They were great, for their time, but have not kept up with the innovation of the competition. It is hit and miss but sometimes you can extend the life of the micron filter by carefully using a power washer to clean. Doubt if you can find it anymore, but if you happen to know someone with a freon filled ultrasonic cleaner it is the best filter cleaner I have ever used.

I use the HOT 250.
Actually I use 2 of them on my 55 as the only filtration.
I only run the micron cartridge in them.
I can get about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks on a cartridge before it needs cleaning.
Marineland recommends soaking the cartridge overnight in a mild bleach/water bath.
Works like a charm. You can either let the cleaned cartridge “air” out or soak in a dechlorinator/water bath for faster turn around.
If you go this route, pick up an extra micron cartridge so you will always have a clean one for the filter in use.
I will agree, the media cage that comes with these is virtually useless.
