don't put chichlids with they rays. 2 reasons:
1. most chiclids need a much higher pH level compared to a freshwater ray.
2. chiclids are not good community fish.

what????

i know people keeping freshwater rays in PH of 8.5 ph is not a factor... and also there are alot of cichlid ray combo tanks... depends on what cichlids you pick as the tank mates...

I'm pretty sure there's plenty of passive cichlids out there. I'm not planning on keeping a Red Devil or anything like that.

I use Caribsea Torpedo Beach. It's an off white sand that is approved for soft bellied fish. It stays very clean as it doesn't compact. It's been great for me.
