My son has asked for a reptile for his birthday, I have never kept any. I'm more of a fish keeper but I thought I would give it a try what's a good one to start with. I plan on doing the up keep on the tank.

Do you know what your son is interested in? Snake, turtle, lizard....what? If you can narrow it down we can give you some good choices.

crested geckos are great and low maintenance, they will eat banana from your hand!-)

How much money are you willing to spend on initial set up? Some things such as bearded dragons and other lizards need special lights that could run up your bill and extra 100.

Imo, corn snakes make great first herps. As long as they are feed regularly and given fresh water once a week they tend to be healthy. Any lizards are substantially harder and more expensive to care for.

Sorry should have been more specific, lizards are what he really likes. NO SNAKES!!!! His mom won't allow it. Personally I like the Chinese water dragon also chameleons look awesome too.

Either cresties or corn snakes are good i started with a corn an now have crestie. If your son is quite young maybe go for the snake as the cresties are fast little guys

Oh I'm guessing I'll be spending around the 150+ range, just for terrarium and accessories. I hope anyway..LOL I see there are lots of complete set up kits, is that a good way to go?

IMO desert lizards are much easier to care for. If your lights are running up your power bill $100 for 1 lizard something is seriously wrong.
