set up would be cheap, though the animal would be expensive: maybe a leachie gecko, they are awesome and very chill when handled

But I think a Bearded Dragon would be a good starter reptile. There pretty easy to keep and very calm demeanor for a kid to handle.
Corn snakes imo small and very easy to take care of. Great beginner overall and easy to house.
