What's a monster/giant fish to you?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as aquariums go,monster fish are those that cannot turn around easily in a two foot wide tank.

With my current tank a monsterfish would be anything up to 6inches :P

IMHO (very humble), I think you've got to take into consideration size, appearance and behaviour.

Take a 3ft African tiger fish... It's a monster, truth be told, it's practically a koi with teeth...but no matter how big a koi you show me, it ain't no monster.

Exactly, I know ATF can move quick, but they're very stiff looking fish and it would be easy to dodge an attack, notably why there isn't 2000 threads on here with the headline ''My atf has take off my arm''.
It's the precision, anger and overall personality that makes it a monster for me.
Take my mother in law for example..........

Yeah but there are very few ATF around that can even take off a finge, let alone an arm....LOL about your in law!

For me it has to be either 18"+ OR predatory. (Piscivore to be exact)
Both is a big + of course :D

It's not the size of the fish but the size of fight in the fish.

This...

I have some fairly big fish now 24"+ and some are monsters.. and some are not imho. The ones that fit the monster mark are like our Aba aba... he's just a mean bugger who can't be housed with anyone else or he'll rip chunks out of it. I have a gar that's got a rep for killing tank-mates but for me has been nothing but a big baby who delicately takes food and is easily the biggest fish in the tank... But is fully capable of killing her tank-mates if she so chooses...she's not a monster to me... yet...

For me cichlids are entirely to monster for my tastes.. all they do is harass and kill eachother and tank-mates and are constantly bickering/fighting that I can't enjoy watching them. unless I wanted to stick a single fish or a bonded pair ( even then its possible one will kill the other!)

danios are lil' buggers and inch for inch one of the biggest monsters!

My rays can do seriouse damage with their barbs.. but only when I mess with them do they act aggressively... to me that's not a monster.

as for a "giant fish" it depends on what species... I've seen "giant" mollys... any fish that meets or exceeds wild sizes is a "giant" to me. I have a "giant" eel that's 24"+ when reportedly her species gets approx. 18"+ so to me she is a giant. I have never seen outside a zoo or aquarium a "giant" pima, rtc, tsn, ect... Most die long before they start getting close to "giants" in captivity.

I strive for all of my fish to fit the "giant" category if it's 6" for the wild max size or 20'.. to me that's the sign of good husbandry. and for me that's what being a MFKer is all about.

A monster fish to me is something thats over 20" and is aggressive.
