What's best for a 75 gallon?

wow....there are some really bad suggestions on this thread.

Why do some people give suggestions of the MAXIMUM size fish in a MINIMUM size tank?

For a 75:

Oscars get too big, put out too much waste for a 75 and especially for someone just getting into keeping fish (NO one wants to do water changes 2x a week)...and I doubt theres a 40+g sump with the tank if hes "turning it into a fish aquarium" so yea, hed need to do 50% changes 2x a week with an oscar in a 75 to avoid HITH etc.

jag get too big, dovii get WAY too big

a pair of red devils/midas get too big...and most fish attack the glass and are pissed because their living conditions are too small or unbearable.

Disagree? How many glassbangers do you see at a SA/CA exhibit at any zoo? none.

If you want a content and healthy fish, probably best to go with some smaller growing cichlids (carpintis, HRP, salvini, JD, cons, sajica, dwarf pikes, smaller Geos etc) if you want a community or pair or...

a single larger growing specimen (Beani, Grammodes, Argentea, Istlanum, Cuban, GT, RD/Midas, trimac etc) for a single fish tank that will maybe allow dithers or catfish/pleco.

you could also possibly do a pair of Beani, Istlanum, grammodes or GT in it, but 2 eventual 10+ inch fish (or any pair with fry) in a 75 = large frequent water changes...

While a 75g is 18" in depth front to back, you shouldnt get a fish that grows 17" and think hes ok because he can still turn around. Id say something that doesnt get much bigger than 12" or so (in an aquarium) would be best.

Well said vwrc,my personal choice would be a single midas/red devil, even then a full grown specimen would be tight, good luck.

Suggesting a Dovii for a 75g is crazy, i fear for that posters fish.

i agree for the most part but my brother has a 5 yr old tiger O at 14 inches by itself in a 75 thats never have had hilth. The tank has 2 emp 400. he does 50% water change a week and he water parm always in check (as of last night, am. 0; trite 0, trats 5) He feeds him 2 times a day too.
I also have a tiger oscar at 7 months old in a 75 by him self with no issues. i only do 50% weekly water changes. I have seen many many many healthy Oscars in a 55 with no hith issues when the owners only doing 50% water change weekly. Of course a good vac with water changes can make a world of differance.
i think under proper filtration and maint. an Oscar perfect for the 75. :)

Solo RD/Midas. I want to say trimac but they can get too big for a 75.

VRWC is on to something. Love my O but he's a lean, mean, nitrate producing machine. In a 90 g with a FM and 5 SDs I rarely wait longer than 5 days for an epic water change. Maybe the conventional wisdom about Oscars needing 50 gallons for their bioload should be up for review?

If I had an empty 75 the temptation to get a Herichthys carpintis 'Escondido' would be irresistible. http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/ (it's almost at the bottom of the page) The Green Texas Cichlid has to be one of the coolest looking fish in the hobby. The ones from Rapps have a legendary, quasi-mystical status.

go with a oscar they are big but they have the person to pet way. its like a lil dog in water all the time. great fish but whatever you decidebest hopes for you a new tank is always fun to have

A community of Sajicas, Firemouths, Convicts, or Rainbows. And maybe 3-4 loaches, not clowns.

x2 ... good choice of cichlids, and throw in some yo-yo loaches ... nice tank ...

oscar(these are my favorite),midas, green terror, red devil, blackbelt, chocolate, trimac, texas, severum acara
