female, especially when breeding, have a very red belly. the also have distinct markings that males wont have, large black spot on dorsal fin

Thanks. No tank mates. This was an accidental pair. The tank housed some juvi sals from another pair and I added the male after trying to give him to a friend. He ripped up some larger cichlids so I had to take him back. After they paired they took over the tank.

female is the way to go for sure. more color and when they breed they are just amazing looking the red and the yellow just pop out at you. i would go for a pair. i had a breeding pair awhile back but they were very shy but still looked really nice.

Depends on the male of course.

Not in anything smaller than a 6 foot tank with any tankmates, which would make the dithers a waste of time.

FM, and savini= maybe a dead Fm, or some dither and a fm alive or dead dither
