They are usually sold for ponds, not tanks. They're easy to come by as they proliferate quickly.

Oh, I forgot to add water lettuce should be kept in tanks that do not have glass covers or hood. They won't like the condensation drops forming on their leaves. In my experience, they tend to wither when placed in glass covered tanks.
 
Awesome thanks for the input. I think I'm going to try the water lettuce sounds like less mess and still give cover and the look I'm going for.
 
On this thread, is there different types of water lettuce? I have purchased one type that has smaller leafs and the leafs are round. The other type I got from a friend were huge (6" plants) and had a lighter coloring and were generally messier than the smaller stuff...

Any insites?
 
Yes, there are two commonly available types. Pistia Stratiotes is the larger one and I forget the name of the smaller one. I have a mama Pistia Stratiotes in my Oscar tank. She a big plant!

But my LFS sells the smaller variety, too.
 
i must have the smaller water lettuce..mine get about 3 inches across, but forgbit is another good one...it seems even hardier then the lettuce
